Tun Arifin Zakaria has a sterling reputation in both the judiciary and business community in Malaysia. His distinguished career, which began in the 1970s in various capacities in the legal and judicial service in Malaysia, saw him serving in such roles as the Senior Federal Counsel of the Inland Revenue Board, Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Malaya, High Court Judge of Malaya, Court of Appeal judge, Federal Court judge, and ultimately as the Chief Justice of Malaysia between 2011 to 2017. As Chief Justice, he contributed to the continued modernization of the nation’s judiciary. His tenure also saw the establishment of specialised courts comprising the Environmental Court, Construction Court, the Coroner’s Court and the Anti-Profiteering Court.

Tun Arifin’s appointments include- Member of the UN Environment Programme’s International Advisory Council for Environmental Justice; Co-Chair of the UN Environment Programme’s World Congress on Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability; Adjunct Professor at Ahmad Ibrahim Kullyah of Laws, International Islamic University; Adjunct Professor at Faculty of Law & International Relations, University Sultan Zainal Abidin. He has also authored numerous articles and speeches published by various publishers including the Malaysian Current Law Journal, Journal of the Malaysian Judiciary and the Singapore Academy of Law. Furthermore, Tun Arifin is the founding President of the Inns of Court Malaysia.

In recognition of his vast contributions, Tun Arifin was published as an Honorary Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn in 2013 and was recently elected as Honorary Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA). Tun Arifin is also a panel member of the Kelantan Syariah Court of Appeal.
